The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte initiated the Airport Road Reconstruction project to improve the alignment and surface of Airport Road in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The project was for the design, contract administration, and inspection of 0.88 km of road re-alignment (new construction) and 1.72 km of road rehabilitation. The project included double surface treatment to restore the driving surface and drainage improvements through the rehabilitation section and full road construction through the re-aligned section. Poor soil conditions were encountered on the project which necessitated the use of geogrid for the entire length and width of the road as full replacement was not feasible. The geogrid provided a cost effective solution to provide increased tensile strength to the road. Re-alignment of the road increased road safety through removal of the “S” curve and construction of a new super-elevated curve.
